Rock Creek Golf Course

Rock Creek Golf Course is located in northwest Washington D.C. Par for the 18 hole course is 65; it consists of mostly long par threes and short par fours. Its best features are its location, affordability, and unique layout. While Rock Creek has suffered from condition-related issues in recent years, the back nine recently underwent a facelift.

Renditions Golf Course

Renditions Golf Course is located in Davidsonville, MD, about 25 miles east of central Washington, DC. Renditions attempts to replicate 18 of the world's most famous golf holes. The list includes Amen Corner (holes 11-13 at Augusta National), links style holes from Royal Birkdale and Carnoustie, and the famous island hole from TPC at Sawgrass. Regardless if it is successful, the course interesting and worth checking out.

Poolesville Golf Course

Poolesville Golf Course is located off of River Road about 25 miles northwest of central Washington D.C. The course is largely straight and flat, with sparse trees lining most fairways. These two features, along with short rough, make the course palatable for high handicappers. The course's most challenging aspect is the greens, which played fast and with challenging slopes. The course was in very good condition when we played in April (2013).

Lake Presidential Golf Course

Lake Presidential Golf Course is located southeast of the District, about 25 miles from the heart of DC. The course was ranked #5 in golf.com's Best Public Courses in Maryland (2012), and it is not hard to understand why. The layout is visually pleasing and diverse, including a few large elevation changes and numerous doglegs. The course contains a copious amount of bunkers and water hazards, which make it tight and challenging. We played the course in December and it was in excellent condition. We also liked the GPS graphics displayed in the cart, which made it easier to hit the proper shot and avoid trouble.

Blue Mash Golf Course

Blue Mash is located 15 miles north of the Beltway in Laytonsville, Md. The course is mostly flat, but does have a fair number of doglegs. Many holes are open, providing a links-like feel. A smaller number of tree-lined holes provide a nice contrast and keep the layout interesting. Water comes into play on several tee shots and well-placed bunkers make good course management essential. Five sets of sets of tees allow you to tailor the challenge appropriately. We played the course in December and it was in great condition.

Langston Golf Course

Langston is one of three DC city courses and is located just east of the H St. Corridor. The course is fairly cheap, has a storied history, and the best layout of the city courses. While the back nine has a few holes with tighter tee shots, most of the course is pretty open. As with the other city courses, Langston can suffer from some maintenance issues, such as hard ground and burned grass. However, we usually find it playable and a good value for the money.

Little Bennett Golf Course

Little Bennett is located about 20 minutes north of the Beltway in Clarksburg and is one Montgomery County's signature courses. While not very long, the course still has high slope ratings due to some unique challenges. The many severe elevation changes require careful club selection and often involve slopes that can drive balls out of bounds. Fast and sloping greens make putting very difficult at times. Nonetheless, the layout is visually pleasing and makes for a fun round. We played the course in November and it was in excellent condition.

Red Gate Golf Course

Red Gate is a city course located in Rockville, Maryland, about five miles north of the Beltway. The course layout is diverse and requires careful planning. Many holes have significant elevation changes, which are visually pleasing and require thoughtful club choices. Further, several doglegs and holes with water will challenge golfers of all levels to craft well-played shots. High slope ratings (123-130) indicate a challenging course for the bogey golfer. We played the course in the beginning of November and with the exception of the sand traps, was in good condition.

East Potomac Blue Course

The East Potomac Blue Course is the flagship course of East Potomac Park in Southwest DC. The course is flat, generally free of water, and fairly wide open. Views of the Washington Monument add to the visual appeal of the course. The toughest set of tees checks in with a rating of 70.5 and a slope of 115, so it may not present a strong challenge to low handicappers. The course is reasonably priced and is usually in pretty good condition for a municipal course.

Eisenhower Golf Course

Eisenhower Golf Course is located about 25 miles east of DC in Crownesville Md. While the course would benefit from a greater diversity of hole lengths, it has a reasonably varied layout with elevation changes and several doglegs. The above-average slope ratings indicate a more challenging course for the average golfer. This is probably due to some well-placed creeks and the presence of dense trees on many holes. We played the course in mid-September and although it was showing some effects from summer, it was in pretty good condition.
