Red Gate Golf Course

Red Gate is a city course located in Rockville, Maryland, about five miles north of the Beltway. The course layout is diverse and requires careful planning. Many holes have significant elevation changes, which are visually pleasing and require thoughtful club choices. Further, several doglegs and holes with water will challenge golfers of all levels to craft well-played shots. High slope ratings (123-130) indicate a challenging course for the bogey golfer. We played the course in the beginning of November and with the exception of the sand traps, was in good condition.

Additional Notes:

The course has an interesting layout and for that reason is worth a visit. The greens were pretty fast relative to most public courses in the area. A little extra putting before your round will help.

We do have some gripes. The bunkers were not well maintained and probably should have been marked as ground under repair. There were no water coolers, which is borderline unacceptable even if the weather is cooler (~55F). Finally, on a Friday afternoon there was no ranger. Slow play, on a day the course was relatively empty, made the round unpleasurable at times.

Water and plentiful trees make many holes challenging for high handicappers. This is reflected in the high slope rating.

The course is very hilly and challenging to walk.

The flagsticks are red, white, and blue for front, middle, back flag placements. The course has black and white 150 yard markers, 250 yard markers on the par fives, and additional markers on the ground that are often hard to see.

The back of the scorecard shows the hole layouts. We strongly recommend that you check the scorecard before each hole because hazards are not always easily noticed due to large elevation changes.
