Rock Creek Golf Course is conveniently located for golfers living in the heart of D.C. Like all three GolfDC courses, it is very affordable.
The layout is interesting, as you would expect for a course where par is 65. The front nine is mostly long par threes and short par fours. The back nine features some longer par fours that can be very challenging due to narrow fairways.
The course exhibits some good size elevation changes and can therefore be challenging to walk, especially in the summer heat.
Rock Creek has suffered some maintenance issues in the past few years. In general, as with many public courses, it can suffer from hot and dry weather in the summer. The course has reacted generously in some cases by offering reduced greens fees.
The back nine closed earlier this year to fix some issues, and recently reopened (July 4th weekend). We played the week after and the greens on the back nine, overall, looked pretty good. Nonetheless, do not play at Rock Creek expecting pristine greens, lush fairways, and excellently manicured bunkers. The course's best features remain its location, affordability, and unique layout.
The course is popular with high handicappers, so it also can be slow on weekends.
There are stakes marking 100 yds (red) and 150 yds (white). Pin placements are marked by flag color, red being front of the green, white the middle, and blue the back.
The pro shop has some light snacks, as well as drinks, including beer.
