Storme Gray is a Washington D.C. fitness blogger and runner. She maintains the blog, The Curvy Road Runner.
Storme was kind enough to answer a few questions for us in the latest edition of our featured blogger segment.
1 - Tell us a little bit about your blog. Do you have a target audience?
The Curvy Road Runner is a blog about running and fitness, but told from the perspective of someone who is making their way along the journey. It's meant for folks who love to run and love being active. Likewise, it is for the novice/newbie runner and those who may be plus sized/overweight and have a desire to run or get fit and aren't quite sure of where to start. My blog is meant to serve as an inspiration and an example of someone who may not look like your 'traditional' runner, but still gets out there and gives their all.
2 - What makes you so passionate about running?
Running gives me a freedom and an energy unlike any other. I came to running at a very depressing time in my life. I'd just lost my job and felt like a HUGE failure. Running gave me a sense of accomplishment, and a sense of peace. When everything else around me felt uncertain, the one thing I could rely on was my morning runs. I learned a lot about myself out on the trail, and had a lot of time to think about what I wanted from life. Running taught me the power and strength of the human body, and I think it was through running that I actually found myself.
3 - Is there a favorite local run that you would like to share?
Hm...I am in LOVE with the Mount Vernon Trail...no matter what portion of it you happen to start on, it's guaranteed to give you some amazing views of nature. There is nothing like it.
4 - What is your favorite DC area race?
One of my favorite local runs would have to be the GW Parkway Classic 10 Miler. It's along one of my favorite running trails, the Mount Vernon Trail, and is just so scenic and lovely! Granted, those rolling hills can be a literal pain in the you know what, however it's a race I really look forward to every year.
5 - What is your favorite piece of running gear?
Right now...my favorite piece of running gear would have to be my shoes. I have three pair that I rotate depending on the length and intensity of the run. The New Balance Minimus Zeros for cross training or 3-4 mile easy runs; Nike Free 5.0's for the 3-5 mile runs; and the Mizuno Wave Creation 14s for anything over 6 miles. It was the best idea ever. Allows me to prolong the life of the shoes a bit, and gives my feet some variety in running in minimalist to moderate to traditional running shoes.
6 - You recently celebrated your third year as a runner. Can you offer some wisdom to folks who have just started running?
The biggest piece of advice I would have to offer to new runners is to not give up. There might be days where you think you can't...or that you don't want to...or maybe you think it's a silly idea to be running when no one is chasing you *smile*, lol. But let me tell you, if running is something you wish to do it can be done. It is as simple as placing one foot in front of the other and repeat. Keep moving, get yourself a good pair of running shoes (and a good sports bra for the ladies out there), and the next thing you know...you'll be running miles at a time. Start small, start manageable, but each week you will continue to grow as a runner. Oh, and another piece of wisdom for newbies...running through pain is NOT ok! If it hurts, STOP, figure out why it hurts, then rest. The road will be waiting with open arms when you return :)
