Don't like to fork out $6 for a smoothie? Build a top-notch smoothie on your own by combining the 4 step plan shown above with the following 5 tips.

1. If you don’t include a healthy fat like avocado or nut butter, add 1 teaspoon of coconut oil to help your body take in vital fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. 

2. When adding protein powder here are a few things to watch out for: 

  • Whey Protein: Is great because it is a complete protein, but make sure you choose organic varieties to avoid the growth hormone rBGH. 
  • Sugar: Watch out for it. Go for protein powders with the lowest sugar content possible--and avoid artificial sweeteners as well! Fake sugar can lead to GI distress among other things. I prefer plant-based hemp protein powder. 
  • Caffeine: If you start adding supplements and superfood powders, beware of jitters. Many of these products contain stimulants like coffee extract or mate. 

3. Add your powders and seeds towards the end of the process so they don't stick to the bottom of your blender. 

4. If you have trouble blending, stop your blender and either let the ingredients sit for 5-10 minutes until they soften or add a splash more liquid. 

5. If you aren't one of the lucky few who has a Vitamix or other awesome blender brand, stick with fresh fruit and add ice gradually at the end.
