Tim Prestige, President of D.C. Front Runners, answers a few questions about the club

Tell us about your club's history (when/how did it start, how has it evolved, and anything else interesting you would like to share).
Founded by a small group of local gay runners in 1981, the DC Front Runners has become a thriving and integral part of the Washington, DC gay and lesbian community and has fostered fun, fitness, and friendship among gay runners and walkers of all ages and abilities. The club takes its name from the 1974 novel The Front Runner by Patricia Nell Warren — a significant piece of gay literature and the genesis of hundreds of Front Runner chapters across the country and around the world. DC Front Runners now has over 375 members and is one of the largest chapters of the Front Runners in the world. Two of our members created a documentary called "Fast Forward" and is a great now/then look at DC Front Runners.

How much does it cost to join?
Membership is $25 for an individual or $40 for a household for DCFR. Membership gets you the benefits of our weekly newsletter, discounts on apparel and other benefits throughout the year. Membership is not required to run with us or show up to our social events, but is encouraged.

What skill levels are appropriate?
All skill levels are appropriate for our run/walks.  We have people who just walk, people who are just getting started as runners and we have some extremely skilled/fast runners as well.

How many members are in your club? What are your club's demographics in terms of age, gender, etc.?
We have over 375 members that span demographics.  Our membership is comprised of people age 18 to 70+ and we have all genders who run/walk with us as well. One of our best features is the diversity within our membership.

Does your club have weekly workouts/runs? If so, when and where are they?

Does the group get together for social events as well? Please elaborate on the types of events and their frequency.
Yes, we have a happy hour at a different local bar every first Friday of the month.  Additionally, we hold various other parties throughout the year after certain marathons and races.

Is your club hosting any noteworthy events/races soon? Give us details!
Our yearly Anniversary party will be on September 7th and will be our yearly celebration of our race circuit awards and the announcement of the incoming DC Front Runner board for 2014-2015.
